This week I planted 80 pounds of potatoes, which is a lot less than I normally plant. This year because of the drought I’m doing things a little differently. I’m dry farming the potatoes, the only water they are receiving is from the moisture already present in the soil.
The soil had been rototilled about a week prior. On the day of planting I dug a ditch, the dry topsoil parted ways to relieve the dark damp soil beneath. I dropped the seed potatoes whole spacing them about 10 inches apart. Then I raked soil over the seed creating a hill that ran the length of the 80 foot rows. To help prevent further moisture loss and weeds, I covered the hills with a thick layer of straw. I’m optimistic for a bountiful harvest but we shall see.
