Thursday morning while I was getting seedlings ready for market and harvesting tomatoes. I couldn’t help but notice shadows that weren’t there a few weeks ago. The sun’s position has changed, it’s no longer directly over head, its starting to lean towards the horizon.

Even though the days are hot and the tomato harvest is in full force, there are signs that fall is coming. The sun rises later, the ground stays cool longer, and the shadows are a bit larger. I love watching how the light changes throughout the year and makes the field look different.

With fall on its way its time to start preserving and storing food for the winter. Starting this week at the market I will have tomato “seconds”, i.e. tomatoes who are soft or damaged but perfect for making sauce.
