The end is near for our tomato crop. We are not sure when but sometime soon the temperatures will dip down to 32 degrees killing our tomato plants. The forecast for this week shows some pretty low early morning temperatures that could bring a frost to our farm. To our surprise last Friday we woke before sunrise to see that it was 36 degrees outside, we were not expecting that at all! Luckily our tomato plants were okay because they are trellis and up above the ground. But we found frost damage on many low lying plants like the sweet potato vines.

That said the daytime temperatures have been delightful, almost summer-y with blue skies and bright sun. Our tomato plants are still producing big beautiful fruits that we are harvesting as much as possible just in case it will be our last. So this Saturday at the Easton farmers’ market we will have heirloom and cherry tomatoes available but only time will tell if we will have them longer than that.

In an effort to get every single tomato out of the field before the frost we are having one last gleaning event in our fields this week. Join us this Wednesday, October 16th at our farm to glean cherry tomatoes for the Maryland Food Bank. Gleaning starts at 5:30pm but if you’d like to enjoy a short farm tour please arrive at 5pm. Right now our gleaning events are the only time we open our farm to the public. This is a great time to see our operation and give back to the community. All the harvested tomatoes will be delivered by the Farm to Food Bank Program to local food pantries.
We really hope you can join us! If you are interested, you must register as a volunteer directly with the Maryland Food Bank and then sign up for our October 16th gleaning. Click this link to register.

Our special for the Easton farmers’ market this weekend will be our Salsa Verde Pork Taco, tender flavorful slow cooked pork in our robust tomatillo salsa that has just a bit of heat, served on a warm corn tortilla. A frost will kill our tomatillos too so we have been harvesting loads.
Our soup for this Saturday will be Potato Leek; silky smooth with a rich flavor, this vegetarian and dairy-free soup takes these simple ingredients to the next level. You will definitely want to try some. We offer our hot soup by the half pint, pint, or quart. Which you can order ahead of time. Our delicious soups are perfect for a quick lunch or part of an extravagant dinner. When making the soups we do not use any preservatives so they must be kept refrigerated or can be frozen for later use.
We look forward to seeing you this Saturday and maybe on Wednesday at our gleaning event!
