Last week I spent some time at the National Heirloom Expo. Each year they have large, detailed displays of squash, tomatoes, peppers, and melons. All organized by varieties, its like a living seed catalog.
As a farmer you spend a lot of time looking at seed catalogs flipping through pages of descriptions or studying the images of various crop varieties online. But nothing compares to being able to see the varieties in person. To see the exact shade of color, size, and texture for each variety, really helps to determine if it’s a variety I would want to grow.
Even though I won’t be working on next year’s crop plan for a few more months I’m already thinking about new varieties to add to the mix.
