Pawpaws and Garlic Scapes

At the farm this past week we transplanted pawpaw seedlings to establish our pawpaw patch. We started these tiny trees two years ago from seed. This year’s planting consisted of over 40 trees and we hope to expand the patch every year as we start new seeds each spring. It will take many years before our trees will bear fruit but we are super excited to re-introduce this native plant to our farm.

It is the time of year that garlic lovers have been waiting for scape season! Garlic scapes are the flower buds of the garlic plant and only available in the late spring. Scapes are delicious and taste just like garlic. They can be used in exactly the same way as garlic in any recipe. But you can also grill them whole like a green onion, or blend them up into a pesto. We sell our scapes by the bunch which contains approximately 1/4 pound.

Garlic scape season is short, typically just 3 weeks. We do our best to extend the season by growing multiple varieties of garlic but it always depends on the weather. So don’t delay in stocking up on your scapes. They will store well in your refrigerator produce drawer for 2 to 3 weeks.

Our selection of seedlings for your home garden continues to grow. New this week is zucchini, eggplant, and yard long pole beans. We also have restocked a bunch of seedling varieties including our sunflowers, marigolds, sugar snap peas, and so much more.

This Saturday is memorial day weekend making it the unofficial start of the summer and typically one of our busiest farmers markets. So with that in mind we will be making tons of pico de gallo, loads of guacamole, and lots of ceviche. These are all perfect items for any cookout or super fun gathering. To make sure you get what you need for the weekend we recommend you place your order through our online shop so you don’t miss out. But another reason to place your order ahead of time is that we offer bigger sizes of our take home items online, which is a better price point when you need to feed a crowd.

Our special this week will be Chorizo Taco, delicious beef chorizo sauteed with onions served on a warm corn tortilla and garnished with our pico de gallo. We hope to see you on Saturday.
