Garlicky Abundance for You

If you’ve been shopping with us since summer, you already know our heirloom garlic has been a steady favorite on the market table. Every year, we grow our own certified organic garlic seed to plant the next crop, aiming to get it all tucked into the soil around Thanksgiving.

We finished planting and mulching our garlic beds on Nov. 30th

This season, after planting more than 600 feet of garlic beds, we found ourselves with more certified organic seed garlic than we needed, a rare and wonderful kind of winter abundance. Instead of storing it away or composting it, we wanted to share it with the people who make farming on a human scale possible.

So for the first time ever, we’re offering Farmer’s Choice Heirloom Garlic Packs, perfect for winter cooking, gifting, or planting your very own garlic patch at home!

Use these heads right away in the kitchen, or plant individual cloves through the end of December for a harvest next summer. Garlic stores through winter when kept in a cool, dry place (if it sprouts it is still delicious to eat).

Planting Tips (If You Want to Grow Your Own)

Garlic is one of the easiest, most rewarding crops for new growers, even kids love planting it.

  • Plant now through late December (just do it before the ground freezes)
  • Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil
  • Add a general natural-based vegetable fertilizer and/ or compost
  • Plant cloves pointy end up, 2″ deep, 6″ apart
  • Mulch thickly with straw or dried leaves
  • Harvest next June/July

If you’ve ever wanted to dip your toes into growing food, garlic is almost foolproof, a cozy winter project with a delicious summer payoff.

Seminole Pumpkins Are Back

Because winter cooking deserves all the cozy flavors, we’re also bringing another heirloom favorite this week: Seminole pumpkins, an ancient Indigenous variety traditionally grown by the indigenous people of the Everglades.

Seminole pumpkins

Why we love them:

  • sweeter than butternut
  • firm, deep-orange flesh
  • smooth, creamy texture
  • excellent storage pumpkin

Their flavor is rich, sweet, dense, and deeply comforting; a true heirloom treasure.

Delicious ways to enjoy them:

  • Roast into caramelized wedges
  • Blend into a creamy pumpkin soup
  • Cube and sauté for tacos
  • Swap into pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread recipes

After we had a total crop failure last year, we’re extra excited to bring these back to the booth.
