Fan Favorite Seedlings Are Back: Luffa and Tromboncino

We have some exciting news: two of our most requested seedlings are finally available. Luffa gourd and Tromboncino zucchini seedlings are back and ready to go home with you this Saturday, May 16th! And that is just the beginning of what we are bringing to the Easton farmers’ market this weekend.

The Ones You Have Been Waiting For

Luffa Gourds are the source of those beloved natural sponges we sell at our booth, and growing your own is a truly rewarding experience. The vines are vigorous climbers with beautiful bright yellow flowers, and at the end of the season you will have your very own homegrown sponges. If you have ever picked one up at our booth and wondered where it came from, now is your chance to grow it yourself.

Tromboncino Zucchini is equally special. These charming light green fruits grow long and curving with a bell at one end and can be trained beautifully on a trellis. Harvest them at 8 to 10 inches for a fine, sweet zucchini flavor, or let them mature into a tan-skinned squash similar to butternut. Best of all, this variety is resistant to vine borers, the pest that plagues so many summer squash gardens.

New This Week

We are also introducing a few exciting new additions to our seedling lineup this Saturday:

Sweet corn is new to our offerings this year, and we have two open-pollinated varieties worth getting excited about. Luther Hill White is a rare 1902 heirloom described as the sweetest open-pollinated corn most folks have ever tasted. Who Gets Kissed is a compact bi-colored variety with an extended harvest window and excellent flavor.

Also we have Double Yield cucumber is a prolific and versatile variety that is excellent for both fresh eating and pickling. And Cajun Jewel okra, a bayou favorite since the 1950s, features dwarf spineless plants and great-flavored green pods. All seedlings are $5.00 per 3-inch fiber pot, certified organic, and ready to transplant straight into the ground.

Garlic Scape Watch

While the seedling tables are bursting, something exciting is also happening out in the field. We are officially on garlic scape watch! Walking through the garlic rows this week we spotted the first few scapes just starting to emerge. We think we are about a week away from the first harvest, and with 8 different heirloom varieties in the ground this season we are expecting a steady harvest for at least four weeks. And when the scapes are ready, Juan Carlos will be whipping up his garlic scape pesto. Stay tuned.

This Week’s Taco Special: Tacos de Lengua

Chef Juan Carlos is bringing one of his all-time favorites to the grill this Saturday. Tender beef tongue braised low and slow, then chopped and quickly grilled, served on warm corn tortillas and garnished with our fresh pico de gallo. A traditional Mexican taco that is bold, rich, and one of our most popular specials every time it appears on the menu. Arrive early for this one.

Take-Home Frozen Meal: Grilled Pork Loin Chop

This Saturday’s ready-to-heat frozen meal is a satisfying one: a grilled boneless pork loin chop served with roasted white sweet potatoes and a side of our fresh pico de gallo. Simple, wholesome, and full of flavor. Just pick it up at the booth, take it home, and heat it up whenever you are ready.
