Our luffa sponges are now available, these wonderful sponges were grown right here on our farm! Luffas are members of the gourd family, originally from China. This year their long trailing vines grew out of their bed into our sweet potatoes taking up as much space as possible. As they are growing luffas look like big cucumbers or zucchini you forgot about.

At the end of the season right before the hard frost arrived in the field we harvested them all. Then we hit them with mallets to separate their thick rinds from their flesh. Next we peeled them, revealing their sponge-like fibrous interior. They all took a soak in a warm water bath to remove seeds and pulp. Afterwards they were laid out in the greenhouse to fully dry for a week or so. Since luffas are a natural product they come in various lengths and sizes, we have trimmed them up and organized them by length. Our luffas range in size from 5″ to 9″ long. Luffas make marvelous skin scrubbers for scrub-a-dub-dubbing in the bath or for cleaning up in the kitchen. You can order the size you’d like for local pick up at the Saturday farmers’ market or to be shipped to anywhere in the United States.

This chilly fall weather calls for hardy delicious vegetables and we have them! This includes pumpkins (we have three varieties), peppers, and sweet potatoes. This week we have four varieties of sweet potatoes: Covington (orange flesh), Delaware Purple (white flesh), All Purple (purple flesh), and Becca’s Purple (purple flesh).

If you need to stock up on Thanksgiving ingredients here are our recommendations from our produce:
Pumpkin Pie – use Tan Cheese
Pumpkin Soup – use Thai Kang Kob
Individual Stuffed Pumpkins – use Seminole
Classic Sweet Potato Pie – use Covington
Roasted Mixed Root Veggies – use All Purple
Candied Sweet Potatoes – use Becca’s Purple
Baked Potatoes – use Delaware Purple
This Saturday farmers’ market is when you can pick up what you need for your Turkey Day celebration. To make sure you get exactly what you want we highly recommend that you pre-order through our online shop, that way whenever you get to the market your items will be waiting for you. You will have no need to worry if we have sold out of guacamole or don’t have sweet potatoes in the size that you want because your items will be set aside with your name on them.
This week’s soup will be a scrumptious Pumpkin Soup. It will be oh so creamy with a bit of coconut milk and a touch of sweetness without being overly sweet. This soup is great for a crowd because everyone can enjoy it, as it is vegan and gluten-free. The soup will keep in the refrigerator for a week or in the freezer for much longer.
Our special this week will be a Tex-Mex Chicken Taco, flavorful ground chicken sauteed with various herbs and spices which is topped with cheese in a warm corn tortilla and garnished with pico de gallo. We recommend adding an egg or bacon if you want that breakfast vibe. This taco will give you the fuel you need to gather all your Thanksgiving supplies. We can’t wait to see you this weekend.
