It is garlic scape season! We along with many of our customers can’t wait each year for this short but flavorful season. Garlic scapes are the flower buds of the hardneck garlic plant and are only available in the late spring. If you are a garlic lover then you will love the scapes, as they are delicious and taste just like garlic with the texture of green beans or some say asparagus. The entire scape is edible. They can be used in exactly the same way as garlic cloves in any recipe, we normally recommend using two scapes to substitute for one clove of garlic. Another way we love to use them is to leave the scapes whole and throw them on the grill as you would green onions cooking them just so they get a nice little char on them and then enjoy as a side dish at your cookout.

We are growing 10 different varieties of garlic this season which allows us to extend the garlic scape season as they mature at different times but we still expect to only have scapes for 3 to 4 weeks. So don’t wait to get your bunch of scapes or you might miss the season.
Right now out in the field when we are not in the garlic patch, we are making beds and transplanting seedlings on repeat. So far we have transplanted about 500 tomatoes and we got lots more to get in the ground.

Our greenhouse is still jam packed with seedlings for us and the home gardener. This week the seedlings we have available are heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers, watermelon, muskmelons, basil, cilantro, purslane, onions, leeks, swiss chard, marigolds, sunflowers, okra, peas, beans, and more. To see the full selection of what we have available head over to our online shop.

Even though this year we have been selling at the market for more than a month now. This past Saturday we finally had “perfect” farmers’ market weather. The sunny warm weather plus it being a holiday weekend really brought out the customers. We were very busy, especially between 8:30 and 10am to the point that we sold out of our Seasonal Veggie Taco (which was featuring garlic scapes) and our Grilled Chicken Taco, much faster than expected. We then proceeded to sell out of our take-home containers of guacamole and pico de gallo.

It was so great to see so many customers back at the market it felt like summer. Big thanks to everyone that came out and sorry if we were sold out of your favorites when you swung by our booth, we plan to be bringing more to the market each Saturday to meet demand. As always you can guarantee that you won’t miss out on your take-home containers of pico de gallo, ceviche, and guacamole if you pre-order them through our online shop before Thursdays at 8pm.
This Saturday’s special will be our Chorizo Taco. We use beef chorizo which is a ground sausage that is rich with smoky chili notes and a vivid red hue. We saute it with onions then serve it on a warm corn tortilla garnished with pico de gallo. If you want it to scream breakfast, you can have us add on an egg and bacon for extra yumminess!
We look forward to seeing you at the Easton farmers’ market this weekend on the first day of June.
