Hot Days Call for a Bit of Spice

It is hot out there and the forecast is calling for the heat to continue. We are doing our best to stay cool by just working outside in the early morning and the evening. Retreating to the farm office during the heat of the day to sit in front of a fan while catching up on paperwork. We are also spending time by the water to cool off too. We hope everyone near and far is able to find some relief from this summer of heatwaves.

This hot dry weather has allowed our garlic to fully cure very quickly. This week we have the first of our heirloom garlic for sale. Heads of German Extra Hardy and Chesnok Red garlic are available by the quarter pound. The German Extra Hardy hardneck variety has 4-6 large cloves per bulb. We find this variety’s flavor to be rich, garlicky, strong, and robust with easy to peel jumbo cloves which make it a breeze to use in the kitchen. Chesnok Red is also a hardneck variety but with slightly smaller heads. It has a nice full garlicky flavor with medium heat which gets sweet and creamy when roasted.

We still have a nice selection of seedlings available for your summer garden including basil, marigolds, leeks, onions, mint, kale, edamame, and more. Check out our online shop to see our current offerings.

Our special for this Saturday at the Easton farmers’ market will be a Salsa Verde Pork Taco, tender flavorful slow cooked pork in a robust tomatillo salsa with just a bit of heat, served on a warm corn tortilla.

We are often asked how spicy our pico de gallo, guacamole, and ceviche are? The quick answer is not at all. We do not add any hot peppers to these tasty take home items. Over the years we have found that everyone’s interpretation of how spicy they like something varies widely. What someone considers mild another person will find it to be extra hot. So we keep our pico de gallo, guacamole, and ceviche free of peppers and just deliciously refreshing.

But what if you like a bit of heat and you want to spice things up? Well, we have our house made habanero hot sauce available in 2 ounce containers which you can add to our take home items to exactly the level of heat you’d like.

Our hot sauce is made with diced habaneros, lime juice, and salt; that’s it no fillers. Habaneros pack a punch but their heat is accompanied with floral citrus notes that brighten any dish. No preservatives are used, so the hot sauce must be kept refrigerated. If you like spicy food we hope you will give our hot sauce a try!
