Beneath the Summer Sky: Gleaning, Governors & Good Eats

Summer is in full swing at Quarter Acre Farm. Between tomato harvests and big events, we’ve been busy, here’s a peek behind the scenes.

Cherry tomatoes, cool evenings, and the lingering scent of garlic pesto; summer on the farm is officially in swing.

summer evenings

Earlier this week, we hosted one of our few gleaning events of the season in partnership with the Maryland Food Bank, and wow what a beautiful night it turned out to be. A group of kind-hearted volunteers joined us to harvest cherry tomatoes as the sun dipped behind the trees. Together, we gathered over 150 pounds of organic tomatoes, which will make their way to food pantries across the region. We don’t open the farm to the public often, but when we do, it’s for moments like this where good people and good food come together for a greater purpose.

Missed it? Don’t worry, we’ll be hosting a few more gleaning events as tomato season rolls on. Keep an eye out on our socials and email newsletter for date announcements. In the meantime, you can sign up with the Food Bank to register as a volunteer to receive notifications of all their gleaning events at local farms.

Meanwhile, in slightly more formal fields (like, say, in front of the Maryland Department of Agriculture), our farm was also featured last week at the Governor’s Buy Local Cookout. We brought our Blue Catfish Ceviche, a bold, bright dish made with heirloom tomatoes straight from our fields and sustainably caught Chesapeake blue catfish from Tilghman Island Seafood. And the verdict? Even Governor Wes Moore, who’s not usually a fan of tomatoes or cilantro, declared it perfect for a hot summer day. We served up 500 portions, met a crowd of new faces, and were surprised and delighted to see a few of our farmers’ market regulars all the way across the bridge. 🥰

If you want to eat like the Governor, don’t worry, you can still get a taste. Our Blue Catfish Ceviche will be available this Saturday at the Easton farmers’ market, served on tostadas or in take-home containers.

This Week’s Specials

🌮 Carnitas Taco: Pork slow-cooked in its own juices until meltingly tender, tucked into a warm corn tortilla and topped with fresh pico de gallo. A fan favorite with serious flavor.

🍝 Take-Home Meal: Pesto Pasta with Meatballs: Handmade meatballs paired with penne pasta tossed in our farm-fresh garlic scape pesto. The pesto’s made with our own scapes, parmesan cheese, spinach, walnuts, and extra love. It’s garlicky, comforting, and ready to heat up when you’re ready to slow down.

🌶️ Tomatillo Salsa: We’re making a fresh batch of this summer favorite. Our salsa verde is pure flavor: tomatillos, hot peppers, onion, garlic, cilantro, kosher salt, and pepper. No fillers, no preservatives, just good ingredients. Perfect for tacos, eggs, or chip-dipping.
