We are in the thick of the dog days of summer. That long, sunny stretch when the air is heavy, time feels slower, and the harvest keeps on rolling. At Quarter Acre Farm, we’re riding the tomato wave while gearing up for the season ahead.

A Transitional Time: From Basil to Broccoli
While it may feel like peak summer (and it is), we’re already thinking about fall and winter. The greenhouse is quietly shifting gears our trays of broccoli, cabbage, and lettuce seedlings have been sown, but they’re not quite ready to head to your garden yet.

In the meantime, you’ll still find a small but mighty selection of seedlings at the market and in our online store:
- 🌿 Fragrant basil to brighten your summer cooking
- 🌼 Blooming zinnias for garden color and bouquets
- 🍁 Cold-hardy kale and leeks ready for fall planting
Tomato Seconds: Ugly Fruit, Big Flavor
The heirlooms are coming in strong, and with that abundance comes tomato seconds. Those quirky, slightly blemished tomatoes that are still bursting with flavor. They may not be the prettiest, but they’re perfect for:
- Simmering into sauce
- Chopping into fresh salsa
- Roasting with garlic and herbs
- Freezing for cozy winter soups

You’ll need to order these ahead of time through our online shop for Saturday pickup at the Easton farmers’ market, and they go fast, so secure your stash while they last! 👉 Order Tomato Seconds
Saturday’s Star: The Heirloom Tomato Garlic Scape Pesto Quesadilla
This week’s special is something truly summery:
A warm flour tortilla slathered with our housemade garlic scape pesto, loaded with cheese and thick slices of our heirloom tomatoes, then grilled to golden perfection. We finish it off with a garnish of fresh pico de gallo, because yes more tomatoes, always.
Make it your own:
🍳 Add an egg for a breakfast take
🥓 Add bacon for a BLT-style twist
🌿 Or keep it as is and enjoy the tomatoes in all their glory

A Curious Garden Experiment: Waddle This Way
This spring, we decided to try something a little different. We broke ground on a few tucked-away garden beds for two new crops: sunchokes (also called Jerusalem artichokes) and luffa gourds (yes, the kind that become sponges!).

Because both are known for their enthusiasm (read: aggressive spreading) we built a charming waddle-style bamboo fence to contain them. So far, so good. The plants are thriving and we’re eager to see what the fall harvest brings.
Have you been experimenting in your garden this season? We’d love to hear what you’re trying!
The Season Keeps Shifting
Summer may feel endless in the heat of these late July days, but the farm is always moving. One harvest to the next, one experiment to the next season’s meal. Whether you’re filling your freezer with tomato sauce, planting kale for cooler days, or just craving a killer quesadilla, we’re here with good food grown close to home. Thanks for riding the waves of the season with us and we’ll see you at the market!
