Sweet Potatoes, Mole Tacos + Spooky Season at the Market

This Saturday is Halloween and we could not think of a better way to celebrate than with a market full of the season’s finest harvest. Whether you are planning a Day of the Dead feast on November 1st or simply looking for something deliciously healthy to balance out the trick-or-treat sweets, we have you covered at the Easton farmers’ market on October 31st.

Sweet Potatoes Are Finally Here!

After weeks of curing our sweet potatoes are making their market debut this Saturday and we are bringing three beautiful certified organic heirloom varieties. If you have never thought much about sweet potato varieties beyond the standard grocery store orange, this Saturday is going to be a delicious education.

Covington is the classic. Rose-colored skin, deep orange flesh, sweet and moist with that familiar flavor that works beautifully in everything from holiday pies to weeknight casseroles to simple roasted sides with a drizzle of olive oil.

Purple Majesty is the showstopper. Striking purple skin with deeply pigmented purple flesh that holds its gorgeous color even when cooked. The flavor is earthy and slightly nutty, and the color alone makes it absolutely stunning on the plate. If you have ever wanted to serve something at a dinner party that makes people stop and ask questions, this is it.

White Bonita is the quiet surprise. Creamy white skin and flesh with a smooth, delicate sweetness that is a little more subtle than its orange counterpart. Many people who try a white sweet potato for the first time cannot believe how different and how delicious it is. A wonderful addition to any meal.

All three varieties were grown right here on our certified organic farm in Greensboro, Maryland, in the sandy loam soils of Caroline County. Sweet potatoes love our Eastern Shore growing conditions and this year’s harvest has been one we are really proud of. They are available for pre-order at quarter-acre.com/shop or come find them at our booth this Saturday while supplies last.

This Week’s Special: Chicken Mole Taco

It felt only right to put something deeply celebratory on the menu for Day of the Dead weekend. Our Chicken Mole Taco brings the warmth and depth of traditional Mexican cooking to the market. Tender chicken simmered in a rich, smoky red mole sauce that is slightly spicy and full of complex flavor, served on a warm corn tortilla and topped with queso fresco. Mole is one of the great culinary traditions of Mexico and Chef Juan Carlos’s version is something truly special. If you have never had a mole taco before, this Saturday is a wonderful place to start.

We hope to bring bunches of marigold flowers (cempazúchitl) to the market this Saturday too.

This Week’s Soup: Creamy Pumpkin

We are making this one from our own heirloom pumpkins, cooked with aromatic herbs and spices and then pureed silky smooth. The result is a deeply warming, velvety soup that is naturally vegan and gluten-free. Available by the half pint, pint, or quart. No preservatives, so keep it refrigerated or pop it in the freezer to enjoy later in the season.

Take-Home Frozen Meal: Steak Fajitas with Cilantro Rice

For a festive and satisfying meal to enjoy at home this holiday weekend, our take-home frozen meal this Saturday is steak fajitas with cilantro rice. Thinly sliced steak with sweet peppers, onions, and garlic, served alongside vibrant cilantro rice. Just pick it up at the booth, take it home, and heat it up whenever you are ready to feast. A complete, flavorful meal with almost no effort required.
